“Ice that forms in the shape of a narrow cone hanging point down. It usually forms when liquid water from a sheltered or heated source comes in contact with below-freezing air and freezes more or less rapidly as it flows.” From meteorology geography dictionary
If you zoom in a little you get to see more detail
Zoom a little bit more …..
Stand still for a moment or two and watch the icicle form; drip, drip, drip.

Incredible photo Claire – how very clever!
not really its just like comedy, all in the timing π But thank you anyway π
Fab photos π Glad you found time from the skiing to take them!
π thanks matey x
You’re icicle pictures are very artistic. The only time I really notice them anymore is when they’re hanging from the frame of my car as I go to start it up to got work on those cold mornings. π¦
We have them on the car too – icicle decorations!
Lovely captures, Claire!
Thank you Lynda, it’s fun to post a few things that I see around and about, regardless of whether or not they are seeds and plants!
yes magical … i can hear the dripping and feel the cool air!
the magic of nature eh?!
Great images!
Thanks Yummy, great to see you !
Well done, Claire! Such a great photo. I wish I had a steady hand to try something like this. You not only do but your timing is impeccable, as well.
Now get back on to those slopes!
Message received and understood John! Back to the slopes but only because you say so π
stunning images, absolutely.. i am a little bit jealous actually.. how delightful!! c
Ah but you’d do a much better job of the photo!!
Fabulous photos! I love how you’ve zoomed in for the smallest details. π
It was when I loaded the images and I was playing around zooming in and out that I thought why not share it?!
Magnificent photos Claire!
Thank you my friend !
I never thought to take photos of icicles in such detail….love it. Off for a bit which means maybe/maybe not being in touch.
I’m not sure it occured to me until I was actually taking the photos!
Happy and safe travels x
lovely shots, Claire
Thank you Glenda, it’s a pleasure to share
I love that shot of the drop of water.
a bit of patience, a bright day and keep pressing the shutter π
Amazing photo … that second one from the top – how did you mange catch that drop – very clever – those icicles are dangerous .. if you get one of them in your neck .. that’s it’s. Sharp a knifes. We had some about 10 days ago .. now the snow is gone again.
To be honest vivi it was putting the camera on a “sport/fast” setting and then hoping! Well actually I did try and watch it form and then hoped!
We have nocked some of them down as they overhang where we walk, others we can’t reach!
Brilliant shots!!! You should try to sell them … !! I think icicles are so beautiful. We haven’t had that many this winter, but on the other hand. We haven’t had any winter nearly neither.
You’ve really captured the magic within Claire. Excellent job. We need to stop and notice all things like that, don’t we?
We do Tammy, we do. It was only when I was photographing them that I noticed the drip, drip drip, and ended up being delighted in watching them – that is until I got a bit too cold and had to retreat indoors!
Wait – you’re STILL in the mountains? Lucky girl…
Love the photos π
I HAD to pop back, yes that is HAD TO π Time to go home soon…..
Beautiful Photos! I have about a hundred of these hanging from my eaves…they beg to be photographed, but I can’t capture the artistry as you do. Thanks, Claire!
Thank you Cindy for your kind words, I’m sure yours would be beautiful too!!
What a great photo – did you have to wait long to get that drip just right?
I think I got lucky, so no I didn’t have to wait too long (it was a sunny day and I could hear the drip, drip, drip!
Simply beautiful, Claire. I really love the close up of the water drop. I was trying to see if I could see your reflection in it, but I didn’t think so.
I think I’d need a much bigger/better lens to see the relfection. But thank you !!
Your photos immediately make me think Narnia!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
And why not! Narnia it is π
I cannot tell you how jealous I am…absolutely green with envy…it is so true! I have not seen an icicle this year…nor last…it is a bit cold here now in the Southern USA, but no icicles….not one little bitty one…maybe next year, otherwise I must take a trip just to see an icicle. I cannot imagine just never seeing one again. When I was little we would always break them off and suck on them like a popsicle..it was so fun.
Thanks for sharing your fabulous photos. Teresa
Not one? Oh well I’d start planning and booking a winter holiday – sounds like the perfect excuse to me!!
and thank you for your kind words
That is an amazing photo !
Oh that is seriously cool!
Thank you π
And grab those icicles with a mittened hand and take a bite when no one is looking–they taste of spring.
I never knew they tasted of spring alice. Trouble is I need to get on some ladders……
Wow! You really captured the essence of cold! Brrrr and beautiful! π
Hi there Debra, brrr and beautiful sums it up
ahhh lovely!!
π Thank you
Wow Claire, these are some amazing photos. I have a funny suspicion you are no longer using a point and shoot camera…LOL looking forward to seeing more of this
