Here in the French alps we’ve been known to use what is available as a fridge. Yes the good old white stuff.
Champagne keeping cool on Christmas Day
Kind of glamorous isn’t it?
As you may know I’ve moaned about the blasted oven seeming to pump out more heat than retain it. Yes the fridgeย is small and noisy, but was working. Notice the past tense?
Meet the contents of our fridge
Not so glamorous!
On the menu tonight? Vegetable soup, things on crackers and salad ๐
Oh dear – necessity is the mother of invention, so they say!
Absolutely, and as it turns out it was colder outside so most things were nearly frozen!
At least it’s cold and snowy, so you don’t lose the food…Always trying to look on the bright side!
Hope it’s fixed soon…what are the rules about rentals over there?
I do remember being in Florida in the early 80s and experiencing a huricane and the next day everyone having a cook-up because the freezers had been turned off. I love that approach to life!
Tanya took the words our of my mouth.

Thanks Mandy ๐
Just keep the champagne chilled, Claire. Things never seem so bad when there’s a bottle — or two — of champagne chilled and at the ready.
I knew something wasn’t quite right. We DIDN’T have any champagne! Memo to self…… ๐
Oh no! At least the food will not spoil! Hope everything is resolved soon.
Thanks, luckily it was mostly veggies and we now have a spare fridge installed. Phew!
That wouldn’t work so well here in Texas most of the time, but where you are, it’s pretty excellent! Just so you keep it sealed well enough to keep from sharing it all with the birds and beasties!
Gosh no it wouldn’t work in Texas! It’s sort of why I posted the pictures becasue I guess for a lot of people that kind of weather/snow is not part of their everyday lives ๐ Have a great day!
Oh man – I hate it when that happens! Time to use up everything for a delicious soup – great idea. At least you can keep the champagne chilled…..
Yes it was a great leek, potato and carrot soup – perfect. And to be honest we always keep the white wine and beer outside anyway, not enough room when the fridge is working ๐
Too bad about the fridge but, luckily, you have the option of the snow outside. ๐
I know, but luckily it’s been fixed now. Normal service to resume shortly ๐
The back deck is often our “overflow” source of refrigeration when we have an excess of food… Just have to watch the critters:)
It seems we are ok (ish) on the critter front. I can imagine where you are though it could get a bit lively! At the moment it is our wine and beer store ๐
I hope that your food doesn’t freeze out there, sitting in the snow!
It did start to, but luckily the fridge got fixed before it got too cold!
Talk about a green cooling system. I read someone on Facebook talking about how her garage is her second fridge in the winter. She lives in Michigan. I’m in the South and couldn’t do that.
That makes a lot of sense. In gardening there is a system known as clamps. Where you effectively bury your veggies like carrots, beetroot etc, line with straw and paper and cover with soil. Apparently they can work a treat. I’ve never tried it though, as I have an old shed atached to the house ๐
This is being very resourceful, not a bad idea!
I’m glad it wasn’t last night as we have had a major snowfall and we would have been digging the food out today!
