As a gardener some things elude me, but luckily for me a fellow allotment friend fills in some of the gaps, and we swap our produce, a red cabbage for some winter radish and I have the makings of a winter coleslaw.
Winter Colseslaw Salad
Half a Red Cabbage, the core cut out, the rest finely sliced
3 or 4 grated Carrots (sadly not mine!)
A Winter Radish or two peeled and finely sliced
An apple cored and finely sliced, a handful of walnuts roughly chopped, half a red onion, peeled and finely sliced and a stick of celery chopped.
Add the dressing of choice – mine was a mix of yoghurt, mayonnaise, mustard, red wine vinegar and salt and pepper
Eat and Crunch!
Gardening Notes ~ the winter radish are Hilds Blauer Herbst Und Winter and Black Spanish Round
A good slaw always hits the spot.
🙂 Mandy
Hi Mandy, for me it’s raw veggies and I miss them if I don’t get a fix of coleslaw 🙂 Claire
Great photos, and a yummy slaw.
I’ve got to figure out the secret of cabbage and the other cole crops…I have a feeling it’s got something to do with row-covers around here, and keeping the grasshoppers off!
(I DO have some lovely carrots stil in the ground, waiting for the frosts to sweeten them!)
You have carrots! Humph, grumph, I got my sowings mixed up so they came to nothing…
the greens are a tricky one, I cover them (otherwise th epigeons would eat them all!) but I have problems here with white fly which I need to work on
There’s nothing quite like the crunch of a freshly made slaw. Yours here looks delicious!
Thanks John, we certainly enjoyed it
Looks delicious
Thank you 🙂
YUM!! Now, is winter radish a different variety. John is always trying to grow more radishes. he is watching his latest batch.. willing them to grow even though snow is forecast today.. you see what i mean?.. c
Hi C, I’m with John, I’m willing the radish to grow 🙂
These are winter radish and they are different to the standard summer ones like French Breakfast. I sow them late August, look out for Black Spanish Round or Frnech Radis Noir. Delcious, they pack a real punch!
looks so good! I love crunchy salads.
Hi Stacey and thank you 🙂
It always amazes me how much fresh produce can be found in winter! Your coleslaw looks divine…
Hi celia, it’s a case of trying to pick the right varieties and then a lot of finger crossing that the veggies will survive! I think February is my leanest month in the vegetable garden
I love coleslaw. Simply love it. Yours looks totally delish. 🙂
Hi, I could have eaten that whole bowl to myself but I was a good girl and shared 🙂
